DIY Natural Tick Removal

Ticks are nasty little blood suckers (pictured below) that can wreak havoc on your furry friends and cause diseases (like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever)! 

You can try to make your pets seem less attractive to ticks, by adding a small amount of garlic to their food daily. But if it’s too late and your furever friend already has ticks, here’s the natural solution to rid your pet of them.

Ingredients:

Tabasco sauce or Tea Tree Oil

Tweezers

Cotton Swabs

Rubber Gloves

Directions

Strap on those rubber gloves and arm yourself with a pair of tweezers. Ready? Let’s get started:

Calm your pet as best you can and get them to lay in front of you or sit in your lap. Generously apply the Tabasco sauce or Tea Tree Oil to the back end of the tick. Never pull the tick out without Tabasco sauce or Tea Tree Oil or you could risk the tick’s head staying in your pet, causing further infection!

 When the tick backs out of the skin, grab it in the middle with the tweezers. Remove and destroy the tick by popping/squeezing it and throwing it in the toilet.

Flea & Tick Shampoo

Fleas and Ticks can invade even the cleanest of pets and subsequently, their homes. Stop the problem at its source by treating your pet to this easy to make shampoo.

Ingredients:

Prepared Castile Shampoo (equal parts Castile Soap and Water)

Essential Oil (of your choice for frangrance purposes)

Directions

The amount of shampoo you make will depend on the size of your animal:

For a smaller pet, for every tablespoon of shampoo (15 mL) add one to two drops of essential oil. 

For a larger pet, for every two-three tablespoons of shampoo (30-45 mL) add three to four drops of essential oils.

Store in a bottle and label with the name and date.

Shelf life: 6 months

Colloidal Oatmeal Shampoo for Dogs

For itching and rashes, nothing is worse than seeing your pet in pain! For itching and rashes, like that caused by fleas and ticks (see flea and tick shampoo tomorrow), you can help soothe the irritated skin with this cooling DIY!

Ingredients:

1/8 Cup of prepared Castile Shampoo (equal parts Castile Soap and Water) (30 mL)

1/2 Cup of Colloidal Oatmeal (228 g)

Small amount of Bitter Apple (a small, lemon-sized fruit – bitter and nasty tasting)

Directions

Boil oatmeal with 1/2 Cup of Water or use pre-made Colloidal Oatmeal. Add oatmeal to Castile Shampoo and mix well. Add some bitter apple and mix again. 

Shelf life: None

To Use: Cleanse the affected area and use as a paste on your dog. Leave on for one minute. The bitter apple in the mix will stop the dog from wanting to lick or bite the area.

DIY Pet Health Tonic

This wonderful tonic can be added to your cats or dogs food daily to see shiny coats, beautiful bright eyes and wet little noses!

Ingredients:

1/4 Cup of Cod Liver Oil (60 mL)

1/2 Cup of Water (120 mL)

1/2 Cooked Garlic Clove

1 Teaspoon of Fresh Parsley (1.3 g)

1 Tablespoon of Vegetable Oil (15 mL)

1/4 Teaspoon of Brewer’s Yeast (1g)

Directions

Chop the cooked garlic clove and fresh parsley until very fine. Place in a bowl and add the brewer’s yeast. Mix in the remaining ingredients. Mix well and store in a brown (amber) bottle and as always, label with the name and date.

Shelf life: 2 months (keep it in your fridge)

To Use: Mix 1 Teaspoon (5 mL) of tonic into their food daily for added nutrients to their diet. The greens in the mixture help to stop the craving for grass-eating, plus add Vitamin A. The garlic helps detoxify their systems and the oils give shine to their coats while adding extra vitamins. Last but not least, the Brewers Yeast adds healthy B vitamins to your pets’ diet. 

While these are all wonderful ingredients for your pets’ health, plus do not exceed more than one Teaspoon per day!

DIY Dry Oatmeal Shampoo & Dandruff Rinse

There will be no pranking on today’s post, contrary to the day. Instead let’s focus on making our furry friends smell nice with these natural recipes. 

The awesome dry oatmeal shampoo can be used on both cats and dogs. It’s great for those finniky pets who dispise getting wet, but still need bathing! It works by removing the excess body oil and dander out of your pets’ coat. What cat or dog doesn’t like to be brushed?

The Dandruff Rinse featured today is meant to be used as a follow up to the shampoo. As an added bonus, you can use the Dandruff Rinse on yourself if you happen to have issues with dandruff!

Dry Oatmeal Shampoo

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup of Baking Soda (110 g)

1/4 Cup of Corn Starch or Rice Flour (32 g)

1/2 Cup of Colloidal or Finely Ground Oatmeal (simply grind regular Oatmeal in a food processor)

3-4 Drops of Essential Oil (cedar wood and citronella oils work great to prevent fleas and ticks)

Directions

Using an old fashioned hand sifter, sift the dry ingredients together, blend in the essential oils while continuing to sift. Make sure the essential oils are well mixed into the dry ingredients. Store in a sealed container and as always, label with the name and date. 

Shelf life: 4-5 months (Store in a dry, cool place)

To Use: Sprinkle a little of the mixture onto your cat or dog and brush it through their coat. 

Dandruff Rinse

Ingredients:

1 Aspirin

4 Drops of Tea Tree Oil (found in Health Food Stores, Shoppers Drug Mart, etc.)

1/2 Cup of Water (120 mL)

Directions

Crush the Aspirin and add it to the oil and water. Mix thoroughly and use immediately. 

Shelf life: None

To Use:  After shampooing, pour this rinse over your or your pets skin. Let this sit for one to two minutes and rinse with clear water.
